The Captain leads at the front and the sweep rider stays at the back

Lead and sweep riders have long been part of motorcycle group riding. Clump builds those roles into the app: the Captain and the Sweep are marked on the map, alerts reach the right person, and the ride keeps going if the owner loses connection.

What do the Captain and the Sweep do?

The Captain, or road captain, is the lead rider at the front of the group. They set the pace and signal turns and lane changes early. Clump measures how the group is spread relative to the Captain, who sits at the head of the spread strip.

The sweep rider stays at the very back. Their job is to make sure nobody is left behind. The Sweep sees on their own screen how far back the last rider is, and is the first to know when someone drops off.

  • The Captain and the Sweep carry badges on the map and the spread strip.
  • The ride owner stays in charge; roles are separate from ownership.
  • The "someone fell behind" alert goes to the Captain and the Sweep.

How are roles assigned?

  1. In the ride panel, open the menu on a rider’s row and choose "Make Captain" or "Make Sweep".
  2. The rider receives a request as a notification and a spoken prompt, such as "Ayşe wants to make you Sweep."
  3. If they accept, the role passes to them; if they decline, nothing changes.

What does the Sweep see?

The Sweep’s own band shows a status such as "You’re at the back" or "Ali is 900 m behind you". When someone drops back, a spoken announcement follows: "Mehmet is 2.4 kilometers behind you." The Sweep doesn’t have to hunt for the missing rider on the map.

A separate alert fires when a rider loses connection. That helps the Sweep tell whether a rider has actually fallen behind or has simply lost signal.

If the ride owner loses connection

If the ride owner loses connection for 3 minutes, ride authority passes temporarily to an online Captain, or to the Sweep if there is no Captain. The new stand-in hears "You have the ride controls".

The stand-in can skip stops, start a group break and finish the ride, so the group isn’t left without anyone in charge on a mountain road with no signal. When the owner reconnects, authority returns to them immediately.

Staggered formation and convoy basics

Riding in a staggered formation within one lane is a common rule for groups: the rider in front keeps to one side of the lane and the rider behind keeps to the other. Leave at least 2 seconds to the rider directly ahead and 1 second to the rider beside you in the stagger. Switch to single file on bends and rough roads.

The Captain rides at the pace of the newest and least experienced rider. The sweep rider is usually experienced and stops with anyone who has to pull over.

Practical tips for the Captain and the Sweep

The Captain should know the route and be able to hold a steady pace. Going over the plan together before the ride makes sure everyone knows where the fuel and break stops are. The Captain can check the spread strip in Clump to see how stretched out the group is and ease off when needed.

The sweep rider’s most important job is to stay with anyone who drops back. If someone stops, the Sweep stops too and lets the group know over the voice channel or with the "Wait" quick message. The "You’re at the back" status on the Sweep’s screen is an easy way to confirm nobody is behind.

Roles can change during the ride too. When the Captain gets tired, or another rider who knows the road wants to lead, send a role request; once it is accepted, the badges on the map update.

Who are Captain and Sweep roles for?

Any motorcycle group bigger than five or six riders is safer with a lead and a sweep rider. On club tours, charity rides and first meetups where riders don’t know each other yet, clearly marked roles in the app mean everyone knows who to follow.

Frequently asked questions

What does a sweep rider do on a group ride?

The sweep rider stays at the back, keeps the group together and sees how far behind the last rider is. The Captain leads at the front and sets the pace. The ride owner assigns both roles, and a handover only happens when the other rider accepts.

What is a sweep rider?

The sweep rider is the rider who stays at the very back of a group ride and makes sure nobody is left behind. In Clump, the Sweep sees on their own screen how far back the last rider is. When someone drops back, the "someone fell behind" alert goes to the Sweep as well.

How do I hand over the Captain or Sweep role?

Open the menu on a rider’s row in the ride panel and choose "Make Captain" or "Make Sweep". The rider gets a notification and a spoken prompt. If they accept, the role passes to them; if they decline, nothing changes.

What happens if the ride owner loses connection?

After 3 minutes without a connection, ride authority passes temporarily to an online Captain, or to the Sweep if there is no Captain. The stand-in can skip stops, start a break and finish the ride. When the owner reconnects, authority returns to them immediately.

How do you notice a rider left behind on a group ride?

The spread strip on the live ride screen shows the front and back of the group on one line. When the gap between the first and last rider exceeds the threshold, the Captain and the Sweep get a "someone fell behind" alert. The threshold is 3 km by default and can be set between 0.5 and 20 km when planning the route.
