Speed camera alerts as you approach fixed cameras and average-speed zones

Clump’s speed camera alerts are there to help you stay within the speed limit while you ride. You get a spoken alert as you approach a fixed camera or an average-speed zone, and your average speed is shown on screen through the zone.

Please obey speed limits. Camera data may be incomplete; always follow road signs and posted limits.

How do speed camera alerts work?

Clump doesn’t detect any signal. Alerts are based on known locations on the map. As you approach a fixed camera on your route, you hear a spoken alert and a banner appears on screen.

An average-speed zone is a stretch of road where your average speed between two points is measured. You get an alert as you approach the start of the zone. Inside it, Clump tracks your average speed and shows it on screen. If your average goes over the limit you get a reminder, so you can keep it under the limit all the way to the end of the zone.

When the speed limit for a spot is known, it shows as a sign on the alert banner, so the alert doubles as a speed limit reminder.

  • Spoken alert as you approach a fixed speed camera.
  • Alert as you enter an average-speed zone, with an average speed meter through the zone.
  • A reminder if your average in the zone goes over the limit.

Where does the camera data come from?

Locations come from two sources: open data from OpenStreetMap contributors and, for Türkiye, the electronic enforcement locations published by the General Directorate of Security.

The data may be incomplete or out of date. No alert does not mean there is no enforcement. The alerts are there to help you keep to the limit; the road signs are always what counts.

Rules differ by country

Some countries restrict showing camera locations while driving. Clump adjusts to the country you are in: in some countries the feature is off entirely, and in others only average-speed zone information is given.

Turning alerts on and off

  1. Open Settings in the app.
  2. Switch "Fixed speed camera alerts" on or off.
  3. Once you start a ride, alerts appear on the map and are spoken; the same layer shows on the CarPlay map.

How camera alerts appear in navigation

Camera and zone alerts are part of the motorcycle navigation on the live ride screen. Fixed cameras and average-speed zones show on the map as their own layer. As you approach one, a banner appears and a spoken alert plays; inside a zone, the average speed meter stays on screen.

The same layer and alerts are on the CarPlay map. A rider who keeps the phone in a tank bag can follow their average speed through a zone on the display.

Keeping to the limit on a group ride

Speeding up to catch the rider in front is a common mistake on group rides. Clump’s "someone fell behind" alert, and a Captain who sets the pace for the slowest rider, mean nobody has to break the limit to catch up with the group.

The pace setting in the route planner keeps arrival times realistic as well. With Relaxed or Normal pace, planned times are longer than the map’s estimate, so there’s no need to speed up to stay on schedule.

Fixed cameras vs. average-speed zones

A fixed camera measures your speed at a single point. In an average-speed zone, your average is calculated from the time it takes to travel between two points, so even a short burst of speed inside a zone can push your average over the limit.

Clump handles the two differently. You hear a spoken alert as you approach a fixed camera. In a zone, the alert comes at the entrance and the average speed meter stays on screen until the end of the zone.

Who are average speed camera alerts for?

On long motorway and highway stretches, especially routes with frequent average-speed zones, it’s hard to keep the limit in mind all the time. On a group ride part of your attention is on the group, so these alerts act as a reminder of the limit.

The safest pace for a group is one that suits its slowest rider and the posted limit. Camera and zone alerts help you hold that pace.

Frequently asked questions

Does Clump detect speed camera signals?

No. Clump doesn’t detect any signal; alerts are based on known fixed camera and average-speed zone locations on the map. The locations come from OpenStreetMap open data and, for Türkiye, the list published by the General Directorate of Security. Please always obey speed limits.

Do speed camera alerts work in every country?

No. The feature is off in some countries for legal reasons, and in others only average-speed zone information is given. The data may be incomplete. Please always obey speed limits and road signs.

Where does the camera data come from?

From OpenStreetMap contributors’ open data and, for Türkiye, the electronic enforcement locations published by the General Directorate of Security. The data may be incomplete or out of date; no alert does not mean there is no enforcement.

What are average-speed zone alerts for?

In an average-speed zone your average speed between two points is measured. Clump alerts you as you enter the zone, shows your average speed through it and reminds you if your average goes over the limit. That makes it easier to keep your speed under the limit for the whole zone.

How do I turn speed camera alerts on or off?

Switch "Fixed speed camera alerts" on or off in the app’s Settings. When it is on, alerts appear on the map and are spoken during the ride, and they show on the CarPlay map too. Please always obey speed limits.
